How to Fold a Paper Box: A Beginner's Guide

If you've ever wanted to create something beautiful and useful from a single sheet of paper, folding a paper box is the perfect place to start. It's a wonderfully satisfying craft — and once you've mastered the basics, you'll find yourself making boxes in every size and colour imaginable.

What Makes a Good Paper Box?

The secret to a crisp, sturdy paper box lies in your materials. Paper that's too thin will collapse, while paper that's too thick becomes difficult to fold cleanly. For most boxes, a weight between 100gsm and 160gsm works beautifully — giving you structure without sacrificing flexibility.

A bone folding tool is your best friend here. Running it along each fold before creasing gives you sharp, professional edges that make all the difference to the finished result. Should you however not own a bone folding tool, you could run the back-end of our pencil along your edges. As long as the tip is not too sharp, it should work as a good alternative.

Getting Your Folds Right

Precision matters in paper box making. Start by cutting your paper to an exact square — even a millimetre off can cause the box to sit unevenly. Use a corner punch to neaten the edges for a polished look, and a circle cutter if you'd like to add decorative circular elements to your lid or base.

Score each fold line lightly before folding. This is especially important with heavier cardstock, where a clean score prevents cracking along the crease.

Assembling the Box

Once your folds are in place, a good adhesive makes all the difference. Pritt Stick works well for lighter papers and keeps things clean and easy to handle. Apply it evenly along the flaps and press firmly for a few seconds before moving on.

For a two-piece box — a base and a lid — cut your lid piece approximately 2–3mm larger on each side. This gives you a snug fit without the lid being too tight to open.

Decorating Your Paper Box

This is where the real fun begins! Your finished box is a blank canvas. Try:

• Layering patterned paper over plain cardstock before folding
• Adding stamped or stencilled details to the lid
• Using washi tape along the edges for a pop of colour
• Tucking a small gift tag inside, tied with ribbon

Paper boxes make gorgeous gift boxes, storage for journaling supplies, or decorative pieces in their own right.
